This event will go down as the tipping point that truly started it all for Clemente Skatepark. So much thanks are given to everyone that came out to Rosa Parks Circle Sunday, June 20th, 2010. The fundraiser was a great success and so many many people gave their time to make it possible. We raised nearly $2,500 not including our Maggie’s Kitchen profits. It may seem like a drop in the bucket, but the awareness this event created more than paid for itself.

With the money we’ve raised, we were able to pay for our event overheads, put a bunch in the bank and took the $850 it takes to get our official 501c3 papers in process, a huge part of being applicable for so many grants and donations.

All the numbers and planning aside, the event was a huge success. We had well over a hundred skaters there throughout the day, and lots of watchers. Some great photographers came out to shoot the event, including Tim Motley from Grand Rapids Social DiaryKurt Westervelt and Jai Yung.

Lots of people walked away with some great toss out, raffle and competition prizes. The competition brought out some gnar and the following people won in the contests:

Game of Skate Finals:
1. Seth Besteman
2. Talen Bartz
3. Auttiesh Danger
4. Louis Kostielney
Best Trick Finals:
1. Sean McMahon – 180 switch crooked
2. Louis Kostielney – switch backside flip over rail
3. John Kight – backside overkrook
High Ollie Finals:
1. Anthony Williams – 7 board stack (6.5 boards for the tie breaker)
2. Auttiesh Danger – almost 7 board stack
Thanks again to everyone who came out, showed some love and made this event as successful as it was. Besides raising money, our true goal of getting the word out there that Grand Rapids needs a free public skatepark was heard. The city agreed to allow us to place the ramps from this event down at Roberto Clemente Park as a temporary solution to the obvious need for a skatepark. We have collected a few extra elements and everything will be skateable by next week. For now we have some painting and anchoring of objects to do. Ben PozniakGeorge EberhardtRyan WiessScott Wygmans and Reuben Garcia have been invited to paint some park signage on the north end of the tennis courts too, so look for an eye full of rad from those dudes soon. Look forward to see you all down there skating soon. Shred on brohams.
